Many retailers eventually face the same question:
Should I stay with my current store platform, or is now the right time to move?
Moving from Lightspeed, WooCommerce or another platform to Shopify sounds straightforward at first. In practice, it quickly becomes clear that there is much more involved than exporting and importing products.
What happens to the SEO data? Will categories and blogs move across? Will the redirects work? Will images, videos and internal links be preserved? And how do you handle custom content that has developed over many years?
These are exactly the reasons we are developing our own Migration Suite at Lightport.
Migration means more than copying data
Many existing solutions focus on products, prices and categories. Those are important, but often not enough.
A modern online store usually contains many years of work:
- Product descriptions with images and videos
- Blog articles
- SEO titles and meta descriptions
- Internal links
- Custom HTML adjustments
- Reviews and additional information
- Redirects and URL structures that have evolved over time
Our goal is therefore not simply to copy data from A to B.
We want to analyse existing stores, clean up their content and transfer it in a way that is technically sound and maintainable on the new platform.
What the Migration Suite can already do
The initial focus is migration from Lightspeed C-Series to Shopify.
We are already working on features such as:
- Transferring products and variants
- Migrating SEO titles and meta descriptions
- Converting categories into Shopify collections
- Automatically creating redirects
- Analysing and transferring existing redirects
- Migrating blogs and CMS content
- Transferring reviews
- Analysing special cases and legacy store structures
The software records each step clearly and shows which areas have been transferred successfully and where manual decisions may still be required.
Intelligent handling of rich text content
Rich text content is an often underestimated part of migration.
Product descriptions and blog articles frequently contain images, embedded videos, formatting or internal links that would no longer work on the new platform.
That is why our Migration Suite also includes work on intelligent content preparation.
This includes:
- Downloading and relinking images
- Adjusting embedded YouTube videos
- Cleaning up HTML source code
- Removing outdated formatting
- Analysing and updating internal links
- Migrating CMS pages and additional content
The result is not just a new store, but a fresh technical start with organised, maintainable content.
Transparency instead of a black box
Transparency is another important consideration.
Many migrations run as a closed process: data is exported, imported and, at the end, everyone hopes it works.
We want to take a different approach.
The Migration Suite offers:
- Dry runs before the actual transfer
- Versioning of individual migration steps
- Understandable log files
- Analysis of the existing store structure
- Clear status displays
This makes it possible to see which data has been transferred and what adjustments may still be needed.
Collaboration through Google Sheets
Not every change needs to be made directly in the software.
That is why we are integrating Google Sheets as an intermediate step in many areas.
This allows customers to edit data conveniently themselves, for example:
- Change prices
- Correct product titles
- Adjust SEO copy
- Add categories
- Edit metafields
- Check images or links
The changes can then be imported automatically.
This creates a useful combination of automation and human oversight.
The future of store migration
We believe migration will become more than a technical data transfer.
It will combine analysis, automation and intelligent assistance.
In the longer term, the Migration Suite is therefore intended to work with modern AI tools, structured logs and analysis modules to identify characteristics of existing stores automatically and suggest suitable solutions.
Our goal is clear:
Not simply to move a store.
But to understand existing online stores, tidy up accumulated legacy issues and make the move to modern platforms as straightforward and transparent as possible for retailers.
We look forward to continuing this journey with our customers.
