Regular maintenance helps keep an online store reliable, secure and ready for new features. This applies to WooCommerce, Shopify and Lightspeed, although responsibilities differ between hosted platforms and a self-managed WordPress installation.
Shopify: more than a theme update
Review your theme, apps and tracking integrations regularly. Older checkout customisations and analytics implementations may need to move to the currently supported Shopify mechanisms.
Version control, such as Git, helps keep track of custom code and review differences when updating a theme. Test the updated version before publishing it, including navigation, product options, cart, checkout and consent behaviour. The right review interval depends on the changes and risks; there is no universal six-month rule.
WooCommerce: coordinated updates
WooCommerce depends on WordPress, plugins, a theme and the hosting environment. Updating one component can affect another. Backups, compatibility checks and a staging environment help reduce the risk of disruption.
PHP also needs attention: use a supported version that is compatible with the site’s components and test before changing the live environment. Security and performance both depend on this wider setup.
Lightspeed: check the integrations
For Lightspeed C-Series, review theme customisations, apps and analytics integrations even where the platform itself is managed by the provider. Whether a move to E-Series or Shopify makes sense depends on your operational requirements and the effort involved.
Keep consent management in step
When adding or replacing a plugin or tracking tool, check the consent configuration and privacy information. The banner alone does not establish that every integration behaves correctly. Test whether tools that require consent remain blocked until it is given.
Maintenance with a plan
Our Lightport maintenance service helps organise these recurring tasks so that you can focus on running the business. The scope and schedule are agreed for your store.
