The EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) has applied since 13 December 2024. It strengthens product safety obligations for manufacturers, importers and retailers. For online stores, the practical task is to collect the relevant information and present it clearly.
Who is affected?
The regulation applies to covered consumer products offered in the EU, including offers from Swiss stores targeting EU consumers. Its scope and the interaction with product-specific legislation need to be checked for each product range. Food, for example, is excluded from the GPSR and is subject to separate rules.
Information in an online offer
Article 19 requires covered distance-selling offers to clearly and visibly provide:
- The manufacturer’s name or registered trade name or trademark, plus its postal and electronic address.
- If the manufacturer is outside the EU, the name and postal and electronic address of the responsible person in the EU.
- Information identifying the product, including a picture, its type and other product identifiers.
- The applicable warnings and safety information in a language consumers in the relevant market can easily understand.
Make this information easy to find in the offer. A supplementary PDF can be useful for detailed instructions, but should not hide required information from customers.
Different ranges, different requirements
Clothing may require textile composition and care information under the relevant rules. E-cigarettes and liquids have additional product-specific requirements, including applicable warnings. Food information, such as ingredients and allergens, is governed by separate food legislation. Do not treat one generic GPSR text as a solution for every category.
Implementing the information in Lightspeed and Shopify
Lightspeed C-Series: store the relevant details in product information or suitable custom data fields, then display them through the theme. Reusable snippets can help present category-specific warnings consistently.
Shopify: use product metafields and, where appropriate, metaobjects for structured manufacturer and safety information. Connect these fields to theme blocks so that each product displays the relevant details. Clear product categorisation helps maintain the information, but does not replace required notices.
How Lightport can help
We review the technical presentation, set up structured fields and theme output, and help automate recurring information for relevant categories. Your legal adviser should confirm which obligations and wording apply; we implement the agreed requirements in the store.
