Replacing an app in Shopify or Lightspeed deserves some preparation. A planned transition helps avoid data loss and unexpected changes to the shopping experience.
1. Data storage, export and import
Many apps store information in their own databases rather than directly in the shop system. Wishlist apps are one example: saved products and customer preferences may disappear when an app is removed.
Before choosing an app, check whether its data can be exported. Before changing it, confirm that the replacement can import the information in a usable format. Consider growing requirements as well as today’s needs. We can help compare the options.
2. Consent management and privacy
Review what data the new app processes, which providers receive it and whether it uses cookies or similar technologies. Update consent-manager configuration where required and check the legal basis, privacy information and any processor agreements. A migration of personal data needs a separate privacy assessment.
Not every app automatically needs consent, but tools that require it must respect the visitor’s choice. Incorrect configuration can also block parts of the store.
3. Reconsider the app mix
Too many apps can create dependencies that are difficult to see until something breaks. A representative test store helps reveal these interactions.
For some requirements, a focused integration with the ERP is more suitable than another standalone app. Decide which system owns each type of data and avoid unnecessary duplication. A custom solution can make sense, but its ongoing maintenance also belongs in the calculation.
4. Measure loading times
Additional scripts can slow pages down and affect both usability and search performance. Review which apps provide real value and whether unused code remains after uninstalling them.
5. Plan for future updates
App and theme updates can introduce compatibility issues. Test important changes in a safe environment before applying them to the live store, especially when several tools interact.
A clear app strategy pays off
A Shopify store can quickly become a collection of apps. Regularly review what is used, who maintains it and how information moves between systems.
